Overleaf Lodge & Spa And Guests Support Cape Perpetua Collaborative
When visitors to Oregon’s Central Coast take time to explore the Cape Perpetua Scenic Area, just south of Yachats, they walk away wowed. Plain and simple! There are so many amazing natural coastal features in the area – Devils Churn, Thor’s Well, Cooks Chasm, the Cape Perpetua overlook – it’s truly worthy of visitors’ full attention.
“I have always thought of Cape Perpetua as being Yachats’ own little National Park, just 3 miles from the Overleaf Lodge,” says Drew Roslund, co-operator with his wife Kristin of the oceanside hotel and spa in Yachats.
“I love to walk Devils Churn and Thor’s Well, but I also like to hike east into the forests where there are many old-growth trees with younger plantations mixed in. Most people head to the shoreline, but so often there is quiet solitude on the old-growth forest trails.”
Our contributions make a difference
Drew and Kristin are stalwart supporters of this truly special section of the central coast, also part of the state’s largest protected area, the Cape Perpetua Marine Reserve, between Florence and Yachats. They regularly contribute to Cape Perpetua Collaborative, a partnership dedicated to fostering conservation within the Yachats area through scientific research and educational stewardship.
Guests who stay at Overleaf Lodge & Spa contribute, too, voluntarily giving $1 per night on each night of their stay towards the collaborative’s work. And guests certainly can contribute more if they want.
“Since 2021, we have collected over $30,000, which is targeted to the Cape Perpetua Collaborative,” Drew says. The money goes into the collaborative’s general allocation, he adds, but “one of the interpretive projects that the Cape Perpetua Collaborative funds and operates is interpretive displays and talks on summer weekends at Smelt Sands State Park, which is literally a couple hundred yards south of the Overleaf Lodge along the 804 Trail. I like to think that our donations help to support that!”
Collaborative’s events highlight beautiful features
Guests who stay at Overleaf Lodge & Spa may attend many of the collaborative’s free events, including those interpretive walks in the summer, the annual Sand & Sea Symposium in November, and the Winter Speaker Series, to name a few. There is so much to learn and appreciate about the Cape Perpetua Scenic Area!
The marine reserve spans 14.3 square miles and includes a Seabird Protection Area and two Marine Protected Areas.
With their ongoing financial support, Overleaf Lodge & Spa and its guests stand strong as stewards of the very environment they enjoy and explore year after year.
Among the many beautiful features within the reserve, Drew says, “one has to drive or hike to the top of Cape Perpetua. It is about 800 feet above the crashing surf and oftentimes you can look down on gray whales just off the coast. There is parking there, but I find the relatively steep, but very manageable maintained trail up to the top to be more rewarding than driving there.”
Whichever path guests choose to reach the top of Cape Perpetua, the view is the unforgettable reward. The whole marine reserve stretches from north to south before you, and the moment of truth is clear: preserving this coastal wonder for the future is worth every penny.
